Yes it is hard.
For one they have a fuse on the cartridge that ';blows'; when the cartridge is empty preventing it from printing further. That needs to be replaced.
The printer itself has a drum unit attached (which arranges the image) that is designed for single use and needs to be cleaned.
Thirdly there are nylon gears and electrostatic rollers in a toner cartridge that need to be check and sometimes lubricated in order to yield optimal results.
Finally toner, should not be inhaled. The black toner dust is carcinogenic and should only be handled with extreme care including a fine particulate mask, gloves in a well ventilated area, preferably under a hood.

Now i am setting up a computer system for a friend and am looking for a printer that would match this number of pages per cartridge. I am thinking about purchasing a Canon imageCLASS D1120 Multifunction Mono Laser Printer and I cannot find the remanufactured toner cartridges for this printer. It says it uses Canon 120 cartridge, Ive found a c-120 cartridge, but it ddoesn'tsay it works for the above printer. Anyone have any advice on where I could find these, also I've googled and checked tons of sites that sells cheap non-oem ink and toner to no avail.Where can I buy non-oem Canon 120 toner cartridge?

On almost all HP laser printers, there is a built in toner saver mode called economode which is supposed to use 50% less toner per printed page. If you only print text and don't care about the more draft-like look, economode will suffice. BUT I read a blurb from an HP manual that recommends not using this setting full-time because it's possible the toner supply will outlast the mechanical parts inside the cartridge. Under normal circumstances it will not wear out the toner cartridge. Cartridges can be remanufactured multiple times before any type of significant wear occurs to normal parts. Wiper blades and drums get replaced every time the cartridge is empty by any reputable remanufacturer. My printer was printing out black text just fine, suddenly flashed a message I needed to replace the black toner cartridge and stopped working. My old LaserJet 2 would let me take the cartridge out, rock it back and forth to fill the toner holes and I would get more mileage out of it, even letting me print pages with obvious light streaks in it even with the ';replace cartridge'; message flashing. This new printer gave no warning and even taking the cartridge out and shaking/rocking it did not let me get any more pages out of it.

WARNING! Using Override may result in unsatisfactory print quality and unavailability of certain features (such as toner remaining information).

You cannot fool it. The chip acts as an on/off switch. When the printer determines the cartridge is empty it turns it off.

There is carbon in the dry stuff and you can get black lung if you sit in a cloud of the stuff for weeks. The manufacturer's all have MSDS at there sites if in doubt read them. I would do it in a garage or outside the first time and wear old clothes !

I had never used a laser printer until about a month ago. Now, I'm hooked. The quality and speed are so much better than inkjet. But now I'm having a problem. Everything was going great, but now my laser printer is printing really crappy looking documents. The ink is all shredded and it flakes off the paper. I can barely read it. Ok, first take out the catridges, turn off the printer for a minute, then turn it on with out the catridges, it麓ll detect that doesn麓t have the catridges, the put them back and see what happens.

I take a bowl and put warm water in it. I add ammonia, about a capfull. I keep dipping it ( the cartridge) in and out till the ink starts to flow. ( I've known some people just to let it soak 5 -10 min.) If that doesn't work I try straight ammonia rubbed on where the ink comes out with a Q tip. Pat either way with a paper towel. Sometimes when you refill, I find it doesnt work right till the next day, the ink has to soak down,
I got that tip from a refill kit.

I suspect you are talking about an ink jet cartridge that is clogged, due to not being used for an extended period. Ink jet printers are renowned for this problem.
The above being true set the cartridge on a warm moist, Not Wet, paper towel with the jets in contact with the towel for 5 - 10 minutes. Run your cleaning utility. Many times this will get you going until the next time.

Most places will not take cartridges back, so you may as well give it a whirl and print. Installing an expired cartridge will not damage your printer. The worst that will happen is that the electronics on the cartridge will no long work, or the ink will be lacking in quality

Most places will not take cartridges back, so you may as well give it a whirl and print. Installing an expired cartridge will not damage your printer. The worst that will happen is that the electronics on the cartridge will no long work, or the ink will be lacking in quality

i have a dell 1700n laser printer that has a brand new toner cartridge but it already says toner low. does any one know where the ink sensor is on the cartridge? I currently have an Ricoh SP C210SF printer, which i think works wonderfully, however it seems that it has been discontinued. The one thing that i loved about it was that its toner would last about 10,000 pages before it had to be replaced. Now i am setting up a computer system for a friend and am looking for a printer that would match this number of pages per cartridge. I am wondering if anyone could recommend a multi-function laser printer like this. I am not partial to any brand, SO... Any Suggestions???

My printer was printing out black text just fine, suddenly flashed a message I needed to replace the black toner cartridge and stopped working. My old LaserJet 2 would let me take the cartridge out, rock it back and forth to fill the toner holes and I would get more mileage out of it, even letting me print pages with obvious light streaks in it even with the ';replace cartridge'; message flashing. This new printer gave no warning and even taking the cartridge out and shaking/rocking it did not let me get any more pages out of it.

Yes, you can override that to allow continued printing. Below is the text straight from the User's manual (page 94 in my manual):

Sorry, toner catridges are not meant to be taken apart, so there isn't much in the way of instructions how to put them back together.

Not going to happen. Dell keys all the cartridge specifically for their machines so they cannot be interchanged.
Your best bet is either purchasing from dell or looking into re manufactured toners.
With regards to refilling, you will get toner dust everywhere, and it is nasty stuff. Not going to happen. Dell keys all the cartridge specifically for their machines so they cannot be interchanged.
Your best bet is either purchasing from dell or looking into re manufactured toners.

Open the front door, pull the cartridge out with the tab sticking up at you. Not sure if you can refill this type, but they're relatively cheap to replace.

Do not use toner powder that is not specifically formulated for the printer in question. Each manufacturer has different specifications and each printer works a little differently. Using the incorrect toner powder can ruin the printer.
If you're committed to doing this yourself, it's fairly simple if you buy a kit designed for your printer as it'll undoubtedly come with directions.
In short, you'll need to remove the fill plug at the end of the cartridge, carefully dump out any old toner to empty the hopper and refill it with new toner before reinserting the plug.
It's assumed that you can do this up to 3 times per cartridge before the cartridge is completely worn out and must be rebuilt.
Be advised that toner is a carcinogen (causes cancer) and that, once airborne, the particles remain in the air for hours. Spilled toner is extremely difficult to clean up and that refilling cartridges will require some tools.
Do not use a regular vacuum to clean up spills, you'll gum up the works and burn out the motor.

no you cant, professional ink refillers at stores mess up on 1 in 5 ink cartridges so having you do it is much worse. plus the printer will get all messed up because it will think it is using one type of ink to mix with another to make a different color and it will make a whole different color and look terrible

You have drum units (that transfer the image) they are usually electrostatically charged and they do get very grimy. They need to be cleaned.
Usually there is a fuse on the cartridge that blows once it it empty. That needs to be replaced.

sponges then it is easy to see and fill tillthe liquid is visible.

When you buy a new toner cartridge from HP, they send you a postal proof that you can put back on the box it comes in, tape the box back up with your old toner cartridge, and mail it back. Are they just asking you to send it back for recycling reasons, or are they going to fill it back up and send it back to you full? They provide the shipping label with their products as a way to show they are an environmentally friendly company that doesn't want everyone just tossing out the cartridges into the trash. They will take the cartridge back and recycle it properly so that it doesn't add to the ever growing computer related trash nowadays. I don't believe they will refurbish it as they like to sell only new cartridges that are much more reliable, but they could sell them to other recyclers, break them down into their unique components and melt them down for re-use or simply dispose of them in a more appropriate manner.
